   A French government building, the Élysée is a palace in Paris situated north of the Champs-Élysées and serves as the residence of the president of the republic. Originally it was the hôtel d'Évreux (1718), before being rebuilt by Jean Cailleteau (known as Lassurance the younger) for Mme de pompadour (1753). The palace became state property in 1793 and was a place for public entertainments (l'Élysée). It was restored (1805-08) by Percier and Fontaine for Caroline murat. The residence of napoléon i, then of napoléon III, it also served in 1848, and since 1873, as the residence of the president of the republic.
